Al-Mut'am bin Miqdam al-San'ani said: Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf wrote to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): I have been informed that you are seeking rule, whereas the caliphate is not fitting for anyone who is weak, or miserly, or very hot-tempered. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote back to him: As for what you mentioned about the matter of the caliphate, that I am seeking it, I am not seeking it, nor is it any concern of mine. And as for what you mentioned about weakness, miserliness and sharpness of temper: whoever has gathered the Book of Allah (that is, memorised it) is not weak, and whoever has paid the zakah of his wealth is not miserly. And as for the sharpness of temper that you mentioned, the thing over which I would most rightly show it is my children, that someone should become my partner in them.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy); however,
this report from the narrator al-Mut'am is mursal, because he did not hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).
