Muhammad bin Hamzah bin Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam reports from his father: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the rabbis of the Jews: "I am going to visit the mosque of our forefathers, Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him)." Then he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was in Makkah in those days. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived there when the people were returning from Hajj. He found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Mina with some people around him, and he stood with the people. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at him, he said: "Are you Abdullah bin Salam?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Come closer." I came close to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I ask you by Allah, O Abdullah bin Salam, have you not found in the Torah that I am the Messenger of Allah?" I said to him: "Describe your Lord to us." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recited these verses: "Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient. He neither begets nor is He begotten, and there is none equal to Him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this surah to us, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that you are the Messenger of Allah." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to Madinah and kept his faith hidden. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated and arrived in Madinah, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: At that time I was up a date palm picking dates. I heard a commotion in Madinah and asked: "What is this?" The people said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has arrived." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So I jumped down from the top of the date palm, then went out and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam. Then when I returned, my mother said: "By Allah! Even if it had been Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), you would not have thrown yourself down from the top of the date palm like this." I said: "By Allah! I am happier at the arrival of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) than I would have been at the sending of Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain is munqati' (broken), and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
