Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by with a captive of his, for whom he wanted to seek a guarantee of safety from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting in the mosque at that time, and he asked Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): Who is this with you? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: He is a captive of mine from the polytheists; I want to seek a guarantee of safety for him from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There is a place in his neck for the sword. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then perhaps you hurt him? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: No! By Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Had you hurt him, you would have hurt Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zubalah, who is da'if (weak).
