Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In every battle the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took part in, I took part; and in every expedition the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) undertook, whether in the early period or in the later period, I was on the right or the left of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pledge of allegiance, I was present there too, and in every military detachment the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched, I took part. If the people feared danger from the front, I would be in front of them; if they feared danger from behind, I would be behind them. And I never let the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) be between me and the enemy, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zubalah, who is da'if (weak).
