Zayd bin Wahb narrates: We were travelling with him. The narrator says: That is, travelling with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). This was when he was returning from Siffin. When we reached the gate of Kufah, there were seven graves on our right. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Whose graves are these? The people said: O Commander of the Faithful! After you set out for Siffin, Sayyiduna Khabbab bin al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, and he left instructions that he be buried outside Kufah. The narrator says: Previously, people used to bury their dead in their houses or at the gates of their quarters. When they saw that Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) had left instructions to be buried outside the city, some other people also buried their dead here. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on Khabbab. He accepted Islam out of desire, emigrated in obedience, and lived as a mujahid. He was afflicted with various trials in his body, but Allah Almighty will not let the reward of one who does good deeds go to waste." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) drew near the graves and recited this supplication: "Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the abode of the believers and the Muslims! You are our forerunners, and we are following after you; in a little while we too will join you. O Allah! Forgive us and them, and pardon us and them. Glad tidings to the one who seeks the Hereafter, works for good, is content with sufficiency, and is pleased with Allah Almighty."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Mu'alla bin Abd al-Rahman al-Wasiti, who is a kadhdhab (liar).
