عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : لَمَّا كَانَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - بِالشِّعْبِ أَتَى أَبِي النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : يَا مُحَمَّدُ ، مَا أَرَى أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ إِلَّا قَدِ اعْتَمَلَتْ عَلَى جَمَلٍ قَالَ : " لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَقَرَّ أَعْيُنَنَا بِغُلَامٍ " . فَأَتَى بِيَ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَأَنَا فِي خِرْقِي ، فَحَنَّكَنِي . قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ : لَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا حُنِّكَ بِرِيقِ النُّبُوَّةِ غَيْرَهُ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ مُتَّصِلًا ، وَرِجَالُهُ وُثِّقُوا وَفِيهِمْ ضَعْفٌ ، وَرَوَاهُ مُخْتَصَرًا بِإِسْنَادٍ مُنْقَطِعٍ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the Shi'b (i.e. Shi'b Abi Talib), my father came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! I think that Umm al-Fadl is pregnant. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps Allah Almighty will cool our eyes with a boy." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When I was born, I was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrapped in a cloth, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tahnik for me. Mujahid says: Apart from him, we know of no one who was given tahnik with the saliva of Prophethood.
Al-Tabarani recorded it with a connected (muttasil) chain; its narrators have been declared trustworthy, though there is weakness among them. Al-Tabarani also recorded it in abridged form with a broken (munqati') chain.
