Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the Shi'b (i.e. Shi'b Abi Talib), my father came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! I think that Umm al-Fadl is pregnant. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps Allah Almighty will cool our eyes with a boy." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When I was born, I was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrapped in a cloth, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tahnik for me. Mujahid says: Apart from him, we know of no one who was given tahnik with the saliva of Prophethood.
Al-Tabarani recorded it with a connected (muttasil) chain; its narrators have been declared trustworthy, though there is weakness among them. Al-Tabarani also recorded it in abridged form with a broken (munqati') chain.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports: Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) told me; she said: "Once I was passing by, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the Hatim at that time. He said: O Umm al-Fadl! I said: O Messenger of Allah! Here I am at your service. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are carrying a boy. I said: How can that be, when Quraysh have agreed among themselves that women will not be helped to give birth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is just as I am telling you; when you give birth to him, bring him to me. When Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), she brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named him Abdullah, performed tahnik for him with his blessed saliva and said: Take him away! You will find him very intelligent. Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I came to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him about this, and he smiled. Then he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he was a handsome, tall man. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he stood up for him, (peace and blessings be upon him) kissed him between his two eyes, seated him on his right side and then said: "This is my uncle; whoever wishes may bring his own uncle and compete with him." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Is this not a little too much? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why should I not say it, when you are my uncle and the remnant of my forefathers, and an uncle stands in the place of a father?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).
