Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), or another man from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to graze goats at first; then he left grazing goats and began working with camels. He did this together with a partner of his. Then the two of them began working for the sister of Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). When they had completed their trading journey, some payment remained owed to them by that lady. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) partner would go to those people and demand it, and he would say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Come along." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "You go, for I feel shy." One day, when that man went to those people to demand payment, that lady said: "Where is Muhammad?" The man said: "I told him (to come too), but he says that he feels shy." That lady said: "I have never seen a man more modest than him, nor more chaste, nor this, nor that." This settled in the heart of that lady's sister, Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent a message to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Come to my father and propose marriage to me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your father is a man of great wealth; he will not do it." She said: "Go, meet him and speak with him; I will take care of it. Go to him when he is intoxicated." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did just that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to him, and that man married him (to her). When morning came and he sat in the gathering, it was said to him: "You did well to marry (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." He asked: "Did I do that?" The people said: "Yes." So the man got up, came to Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "People are saying that I have married (you to) Muhammad." She replied: "Yes. Now do not make your judgement look foolish, for (Sayyiduna) Muhammad is a man of such-and-such qualities." Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) kept persuading him until the man was content. Then she sent a message to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), sent him two uqiyahs of silver or gold, and said: "Buy a robe with it and give that robe to me as a gift, and buy a ram, and do such-and-such." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did just that.
Al-Tabarani and al-Bazzar recorded it. The narrators of al-Tabarani are the narrators of the Sahih except Abu Khalid al-Walibi, and he is thiqah (trustworthy). The narrators of al-Bazzar are likewise, except that his teacher Ahmad bin Yahya al-Sufi is thiqah (trustworthy) but is not one of the narrators of the Sahih. However, he recorded these words in his narration: Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Go to him in such a way that there is no compulsion"; he reported this word in place of the word "intoxicated". And about the robe he said: "Give this robe to him as a gift," that is, he did not say, "Give it to me as a gift."
