Sa'id bin al-Musayyab narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his voice before Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Why are you raising your voice before me, when I took part in the Battle of Badr and you did not, I gave the pledge to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (at the Pledge of Ridwan) and you did not, and you fled on the day of Uhud and I did not flee? Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: As for your saying that you took part in the Battle of Badr and I did not, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to stay behind for the sake of his daughter, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also gave me a share and granted me my reward. As for your saying that you gave the pledge and I did not, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent me to the idolaters, and you know this. When I was delayed in returning, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his right hand on his left hand and said: This is for Uthman bin Affan. So the left hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is better than my right hand. As for your saying that I fled on the day of Uhud and you did not flee, Allah Almighty has said: "Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met, it was only Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, and Allah has certainly pardoned them." (Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, said:) So why do you reproach me for a sin which Allah Almighty has pardoned?
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good). Another route of it has already passed in this chapter and in other chapters.
