Shaqiq narrates: Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) met al-Walid bin Uqbah, and al-Walid said to him: Why is it that I see you have turned away from the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)? Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Convey this message to him from me: that I did not flee on the day of Aynayn (Asim, the narrator, says: this means the day of Uhud), that I did not stay behind from the Battle of Badr, and that I did not abandon the way of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: Al-Walid went and informed Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) of this, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As for his saying that I did not flee on the day of Aynayn, how can he reproach me for a sin which Allah Almighty has pardoned? Allah Almighty has said: "Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met, it was only Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, and Allah has certainly pardoned them." As for his saying that I did not stay behind from the Battle of Badr, (the reason in my case was) that I was nursing Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until she passed away; that is why the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted a share for me, and whoever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted a share for is as though he took part in the battle. As for his (that is, Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf's, may Allah be pleased with him) saying that I did not abandon the way of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), neither I have the strength for it nor does he (to follow the way of Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, completely). So go to him and tell him this.
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, al-Tabarani recorded it in abridged form, and al-Bazzar recorded it at length in a similar form. Its chain contains Asim bin Bahdalah, who is hasan al-hadith (fair in hadith), and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
