Yahya bin Bukayr narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed caliph in the month of Rajab in the year 13 AH, and he was martyred in the last part of Dhu al-Hijjah in the year 23 AH. He lived for three days after being wounded and passed away at the end of Dhu al-Hijjah. Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer, his son Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) washed him, he was shrouded in five garments, and then he was buried beside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was wounded on a Wednesday, when nine days remained until the end of Dhu al-Hijjah. Some people have said that he passed away that same day (on which he was wounded). As for his age at the time of his death, according to what I heard Imam Malik state: he mentioned that his age was the same as the age of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that is, sixty-three years. Some say it was fifty-nine years, and some say it was fifty-three years or fifty-five years. The caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) lasted ten years, four months and some days.
Al-Tabarani recorded it.
