Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The father of Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Ubayy (that is, Abdullah bin Ubayy) said to him: O my son, ask the Messenger of Allah for one of his garments for me, shroud me in that garment, and also request him to lead my funeral prayer. So Abdullah said: O Messenger of Allah! You know the prominent standing of Abdullah bin Ubayy. He has told me to ask you for a garment in which we may shroud him, and that you also offer his funeral prayer. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him one of his garments, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to offer his funeral prayer. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! You know Abdullah and his hypocrisy, and Allah Almighty has forbidden you to offer his funeral prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: How is that? He replied: (Allah Almighty has said:) "If you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah Almighty will not forgive them." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I will do it more times than that. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning it: "When any one of them dies, never offer his funeral prayer." And Allah Almighty also revealed this verse: "It is the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; Allah Almighty will not forgive them." The narrator says: Once a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat with him for a long time. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out three times so that he would follow him out, but he did not do so. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he sensed displeasure on the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because of that man's sitting. He said: Perhaps you have caused distress to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The man understood and got up. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I got up three times so that you would follow me, and you did not do so. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! It would be fitting if you adopted a screen (hijab), for your wives are not like other women; this would be a means of greater purity for their hearts. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "O you who believe! Do not enter the houses of the Prophet; but when you are given permission for a meal, the ruling is different, and even then do not be ones who watch for the vessel." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him of it. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about the captives. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Spare the lives of your people and take ransom from them, and seek help through it (that is, use this ransom for various purposes). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) urged that he have them killed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If the two of you had been of one opinion, we would not have gone against your opinion. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) adopted the view of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning it: "It is not fitting for a prophet to have (disbelieving) captives (and release them for ransom); he should thoroughly shed (the disbelievers') blood in the land. You desire the goods of this world, while Allah Almighty desires the Hereafter (and its good)." The narrator says: This verse was revealed: "And We created man from an extract of clay, then placed him as a drop of fluid in a firm (or secure) place (that is, the womb)", to the end of the (following) verse. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Blessed is Allah Almighty, the best of creators. Then this verse was revealed: "Blessed is Allah Almighty, the best of creators."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and in it are these words: "If the two of you had been of one opinion, I would not have gone against your opinion." Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Ubaydah bin al-Fudayl bin Iyad, who is layyin (weak), and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
