Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14430

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) excelled other people in four respects. Concerning the captives of the Battle of Badr, he had advised that they be killed, and Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Had it not been for a decree from Allah that had already gone forth, a great punishment would have touched you for what you did." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) raised the matter of the hijab: he told the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that they should observe hijab, and Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: O Ibn al-Khattab! You say this to us while the revelation descends in our homes? Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And when you ask them for anything, ask them from behind a screen." And (another virtue of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) relates to the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in which he said: "O Allah! Strengthen Islam through Umar." (And another virtue of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) relates to his view concerning Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), in that he was the first to pledge allegiance to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Imam Ahmad, Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Nahshal, whom I do not know. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
