Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Before I accepted Islam, I went out looking for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He had reached the mosque before me, and I stood behind him. He began reciting Surah al-Haqqah, and I was greatly amazed at the composition of the Qur'an. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I thought: By Allah! This man is a poet, just as Quraysh say. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Just then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Indeed, it is the word of a noble Messenger, and it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe." I thought that he was a soothsayer, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Nor is it the word of a soothsayer; little do you take heed. It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds," and he recited to the end of the surah. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: At that moment Islam settled completely in my heart.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the narrator Shurayh bin Ubayd did not meet the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
