Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14408

Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Grant Islam strength through Umar bin al-Khattab." (The narrator states:) In the early part of the night Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had beaten his sister, who was reciting this verse: "Read in the name of your Lord who created." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) beat her so much that it seemed to him he might kill that woman. Then he got up in the early morning and heard her reciting: "Read in the name of your Lord who created." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! This is neither poetry nor humming (that is, chanting)." Then he went and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He found Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) at the door, and he knocked at the door. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Who is it?" He replied: "Umar bin al-Khattab." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "First let me seek permission for you from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Umar is at the door." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If Allah Almighty has intended good for Umar, He will bring him into the religion." He said to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): "Open the door." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) by both his sides, shook him and said: "What do you want, and why have you come?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Present to me that to which you call." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He alone is God, He has no partner, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam on the spot. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now go" (or Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Shall I go?").
Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Yazid bin Rabi'ah al-Rahabi, who is matruk (abandoned); Ibn Adi said: "I hope there is no harm in him." The remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
