عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلًا ، لَاتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَلِيلًا " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ دَاوُدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْأَوْدِيُّ ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "If I were to take anyone as a khalil (intimate friend), I would take Abu Bakr as a khalil."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Dawud bin Yazid al-Awdi, and he is da'if (weak).
