Sayyiduna Khuraym bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "This is white al-Hirah, raised up before me, and this is al-Shayma' bint Buqaylah al-Azdiyyah, riding a white mule, with a black wrap bound around her head." The narrator says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! If we enter al-Hirah and I find this woman in this state, will she be mine? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She will be yours." The narrator says: Then the Arabs apostatised, but no one from the tribe of Tayy' apostatised. We fought Qays on the basis of Islam, among them Utbah bin Hisn, and we fought Tulayhah bin Khuwaylid al-Faq'asi. Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) praised us for this, and among what he said about us are these words: "May Allah Almighty grant the tribe of Tayy' the best reward on our behalf, who fought fiercely in their own land on the battlefield of warriors. They were the bearers of the banners of kindness and generosity, whenever the strong wind overturned every tent. They struck the people of the tribe of Qays for the sake of religion, after those people (of Qays) had accepted the call of those inviting to darkness and blindness." Then Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) set out against Musaylimah, and we set out with him. When we had finished with Musaylimah and his companions, we came towards the region of Basrah, and there at the place of Kazimah we encountered Hurmuz with a large host. There was no greater enemy of the Arabs than Hurmuz. Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) came out before him and challenged him to single combat. Hurmuz came out against him, and Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him. He wrote to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about this, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave Hurmuz's belongings to Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) as a reward. The value of Hurmuz's cap was one hundred thousand dirhams; it was the custom of the Persians that when someone became a chief among them, they would make him a cap worth one hundred thousand dirhams. Then we travelled along a road until we reached al-Hirah. The first to come before us there was a woman named al-Shayma' bint Buqaylah, riding her white mule and wearing a black wrap, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had described. I said about this woman: The Messenger of Allah gave this woman to me as a gift. Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me for proof of this; I presented the proof to him, and he handed that woman over to me. That woman's brother, Abd al-Masih, came to us and said to me: Sell her to me. I said: By Allah! I will not take anything less than one thousand. He gave me one thousand. It was said to me: Had you asked for one hundred thousand, he would have given you that as well. I said: I did not know that there was any wealth more than one thousand. In a report other than this one it is related that the two witnesses were Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it.
