Qays bin Habtar narrates: The daughter of al-Hakam said: I said to my grandfather: "O Banu Umayyah, I have not seen any people more helpless than you, or holding a worse opinion, concerning the Messenger of Allah." He said: "O my daughter, do not blame us. I will tell you only what I saw with these two eyes of mine. We thought: by Allah, we keep hearing about Quraysh that they are being overpowered by this renegade in our mosque. So we decided to do something together, and we agreed upon something regarding it. When we saw him, we heard some voices that made us think that no horse would be left in Tihamah except that it was coming towards us. We could not make sense of anything until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) completed his prayer and went back to his home. Then we made a plan for another night. When he came, we advanced towards him, and I saw the mountains of Safa and Marwah join with one another and become a barrier between us and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, that (attempt) did us no good."
At-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except the daughter of al-Hakam, whom I do not know.
