Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Prophet Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) had intense protective jealousy (ghayrah). When he went out, the doors would be locked, and no one could come in to his wife until he returned. One day he went out and the doors were locked. His wife came and looked into the courtyard, and there was a man standing in the middle of the courtyard. She asked the maidservant in the house: 'From where has this man come into the house, when the doors are locked? By Allah, he will surely be disgraced at the hands of Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him).' When Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) came, the man was standing in the middle of the house. Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) asked: 'Who are you?' He replied: 'I am the one who neither fears kings nor can any barrier keep me out.' Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) said: 'Then, by Allah, you must be the Angel of Death. Welcome to the command of Allah.' Then Sayyiduna Dawud wrapped himself in a sheet in that very place where his soul was to be taken, until he passed away. When the sun rose upon him, Sayyiduna Sulayman (peace be upon him) said to the birds: 'Shade Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him).' So the birds shaded Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him), and there were so many birds that the whole land was cast in shade. Then Sayyiduna Sulayman (peace be upon him) said to the birds: 'Fold your wings.'" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) demonstrated to us how the birds did it, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his hands (and said): "On that day the birds also prayed for mercy for him."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains al-Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Hantab, whom Abu Zur'ah and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
