Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first to deny his own word was Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times, and said: "When Allah Almighty created Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him), He passed His hand over his back and brought forth his offspring, and presented his offspring before him. Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) saw among them a man who was shining (or beautiful), and asked: 'O my Lord, who is this?' The Lord said: 'This is one of your descendants, Dawud.' Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) asked: 'How long will his life be?' The Lord said: 'Sixty years.' Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) said: 'O my Lord, increase his life.' The Lord said: 'No; however, if you give him (some years) from your own life, that can be done.' So Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) had forty years from his own life added to his life. Allah Almighty recorded it in writing and made the angels witnesses to it. When the angel came to take the soul of Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him), he said: 'Forty years of my life still remain.' It was said to him: 'You gave those to your son, Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him).' Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) denied it. Allah Almighty had the writing brought out and the proof produced. Thus Allah Almighty made the life of Sayyiduna Dawud one hundred years, and the life of Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) was also completed as a full one thousand years."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it. At its beginning he transmitted these words: "When the verse concerning debt was revealed", and in it are these words: "How long was his life? He replied: Sixty years". The rest of the narration is with the same meaning as before. Its chain contains Ali bin Zayd, whom the majority declared da'if (weak), and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
