Abayah bin Rifa'ah says: News reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) built the palace, he said: The little noise has been cut off. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) to him. When he arrived, he took out his fire-stick, kindled his fire and bought firewood for a dirham. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was told: A man has done such and such. He said: That is Muhammad bin Maslamah. Then he went out to him and swore by Allah that he had not said it. He (Muhammad bin Maslamah) said: We will convey on your behalf what you say, and we will do what we have been ordered to do. Then he (Sa'd) turned to him, offering to give him provisions for the journey, but he refused to take them. He set out for Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and hurried to him; his going and returning took nineteen nights. He (Umar) said: Were it not for our good opinion of you, we would have thought that you had not carried out (the task) on our behalf. He replied: Yes (I did)! He sends you greetings of peace, offers his apology and swears by Allah that he did not say it. He asked: Did he give you anything as provisions for the journey? He replied: No. He said: What prevented you from giving me something as provisions for the journey? He said: I did not like to order something to be given for you, so that the coolness would be yours and the heat would fall on me, while around me are the people of Madinah, whom hunger is killing; and I have heard the Messenger of Allah say: "A man should not eat his fill while leaving his neighbour (hungry)."
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded part of it; its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih", except that Abayah bin Rifa'ah did not hear from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
