وَعَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَالَ : خَرَجْتُ مَعَ أَهْلِي أُرِيدُ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَإِذَا بِهِ قَائِمٌ ، وَإِذَا رَجُلٌ مُقْبِلٌ عَلَيْهِ ، فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ لَهُمَا حَاجَةً فَجَلَسْتُ ، فَوَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - حَتَّى جَعَلْتُ أَرْثِي لَهُ مِنْ طُولِ الْقِيَامِ ، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ ، فَقُمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، لَقَدْ قَامَ بِكَ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى جَعَلْتُ أَرْثِي لَكَ مِنْ طُولِ الْقِيَامِ ؟ قَالَ : " أَتَدْرِي مَنْ هَذَا ؟ " . قُلْتُ : لَا . قَالَ : " جِبْرِيلُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - مَازَالَ يُوصِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيُوَرِّثُهُ ، أَمَا إِنَّكَ لَوْ سَلَّمْتَ عَلَيْهِ لَرَدَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ " . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
A man from the Ansar says: I set out with my family intending to meet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was standing at a place, and a man was standing facing him. I thought that perhaps they had some important matter, so I sat down. By Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained standing for so long that, because of the length of the standing, I began to feel distressed for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the other man had left, I got up and went to him and said: O Messenger of Allah! That man kept you standing so long that I began to feel distressed for you because of your long standing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know who that was?" I replied: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril, and he kept urging me about the neighbour until I thought that he would make him an heir. Had you greeted him with salam, he would have returned your greeting."
