بَابُ مَتَى يُعَذِّرُ الْوَالِدُ فِي أَدَبِ وَلَدِهِ
When a father is excused in disciplining his child

عَنْ أَبِي جُبَيْرَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " الْوَلَدُ سَيِّدٌ سَبْعُ سِنِينَ ، وَعَبْدٌ سَبْعُ سِنِينَ ، وَوَزِيرٌ سَبْعُ سِنِينَ ، فَإِنْ رَضِيتَ مُكَاتَفَتَهُ لِإِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ ، وَإِلَّا فَاضْرِبْ عَلَى جَنْبِهِ فَقَدِ اعْتَذَرْتَ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ وَقَالَ : لَا يُرْوَى عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - إِلَّا بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، وَفِيهِ زَيْدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرَةَ بْنِ مَحْمُودٍ وَهُوَ مَتْرُوكٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Jubayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A child is a master for seven years, a servant for seven years, and a minister for seven years. If you are pleased with his conduct at the age of twenty-one, well and good; otherwise, pat him on his side (that is, you are no longer bound to bring him up), for you have presented your excuse before Allah Almighty."
Imam Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and he states: This is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only with this chain. Its chain contains a narrator, Zayd bin Jubayrah bin Mahmud, and he is matruk (abandoned).
