Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We had a slave-girl who was singing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the house, and the slave-girl carried on singing in the same state. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to come in, and she abandoned the singing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came in, he asked: What are you laughing at, O Messenger of Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him, and he submitted: I too will certainly hear what you were hearing (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was hearing. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her (the slave-girl), and she sang for him too. The narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy). The report about singing at a wedding has already passed earlier.
