Asad bin Wada'ah narrates: A man named Jarir came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! My family disobey me, so with what should I punish them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Forgive." He said the same thing a second time, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said this three times. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you must punish, then punish in proportion to the offence, and avoid striking the face."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. The narrator Asad did not live at the time of this incident, so
this report is mursal (with a missing link), and all of its narrators have been declared trustworthy, though there is weakness in them.
