Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 13172

Sayyiduna Hanzalah al-Katib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen and said: "When you two are together, Ali will be the commander; and when you two are apart, each of you will carry out his own assigned work." Then Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he mentioned his own name at the beginning, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not object to that. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in it he mentioned the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) first.
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani. Its chain contains a narrator, Sayf bin Umar al-Asadi, who is matruk (abandoned).
