Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1316

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I, my mother (Sayyidah Umm Sulaym, may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) were sitting. We ate meat and bread, then I called for water for ablution. The two of them said: Why should we perform ablution? I said: Because of this food that we have eaten. They said: Shall we perform ablution because of something pure and wholesome? The one who was better than you (that is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) did not perform ablution because of it.
Imam Ahmad recorded this report, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
