Sayyiduna Abu Kahil (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A heated exchange took place between two of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they became estranged from one another. I met one of the two and said: "What is the reason you are upset with so-and-so, when I have heard him praising you, and he was praying for you abundantly?" Then I met the other man and said something similar to him. I kept going back and forth between the two until they were reconciled. Then I thought: "What have I done? I have brought myself to ruin, and I have made peace between the two of them." I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I did not hear anything from this one, nor did I hear anything from the other." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Kahil, make peace between people, even if it is by such-and-such." The narrator says: It was some word like this which I did not understand. I asked: "What was meant by it?" He said: "By it was meant speaking untruthfully."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Dawud al-A'ma (the blind), and he is a kadhdhab (liar).
