Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 12974

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not permissible to cut off relations for more than three days. When the two of them meet and one of them greets the other and the other returns the greeting, they both share in the reward. If the other refuses to return the greeting, the first is freed from the sin and the other goes back carrying that sin. And I fear that if the two of them die while cut off from one another, they will not be together in Paradise."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat from his teacher Miqdam bin Dawud, who is da'if (weak); Ibn Daqiq al-Id said that he has been declared trustworthy.
