Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Jaz' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man who had come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and had accepted Islam passed away as a stranger far from his homeland. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing by his grave, and he asked: What is your name? I said: Al-As. He said to the son of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): What is your name? He replied: Al-As. He asked al-As: What is your name? He replied: Al-As. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are servants of Allah; lower him into the grave! The narrator says: So we lowered our companion into the grave, and when we came out of the grave our names had been changed (that is, our names had been made Abdullah).
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth. He has been declared trustworthy, and more than one have declared him da'if (weak). The rest of the narrators of al-Bazzar are the narrators of the Sahih.
