Abu Dawud narrates: Sayyiduna al-Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) met me; he took my hand, shook hands with me, met me with a smile and said: "Do you know why I took your hand?" I replied: "No, but I suppose that you must have done so only for some good reason." He said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met me once and did the same with me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do you know why I have done this with you?' I submitted: 'No!' So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When two Muslims meet one another, shake hands with one another and meet one another with a cheerful face, then when they do this, they are both forgiven before they part.'" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud has recorded this narration in abridged form.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The person narrating from Sayyiduna al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with him), Abu Dawud, is matruk (abandoned).
