Abu al-Sha'tha' narrates: The Dajjal was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "Do not mention him excessively, for when a matter is decreed in the heavens, it descends to the earth more quickly once it appears on people's tongues. How will you fare when the enemy is safe and you are in fear? How will you fare when the enemy is in the shade and you are in the sun?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains al-Mas'udi, whose memory became confused (ikhtilat). Imam Ahmad recorded that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Dajjal will not emerge until people become heedless of mentioning him, and until the imams stop mentioning him on the pulpits."
