Abd al-Malik bin Marwan narrates: Before I became the overseer of this office of rule, I used to sit in the company of Sayyidah Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Madinah. She would say: "O Abd al-Malik! I consider that you possess the qualities and abilities to become the overseer of the rule of this Ummah. If you become its overseer, then beware of shedding blood, for I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'A man will be pushed back from the gate of Paradise as he looks towards Paradise, and the reason for it will be the blood of a Muslim which he unjustly shed.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration; its chain contains Abd al-Khaliq bin Zayd bin Waqid, who is da'if (weak).
