Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 12234

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "You are in a time in which the prayer is performed long and the sermon is delivered short; the scholars of this time are many and the preachers few. Soon a time will come upon people in which the prayer will be performed short and the sermon delivered long; in that time the preachers will be many and the scholars few. They will delay the prayers, to the point that they will pray the Asr prayer when the sunlight has become faint. Whoever of you finds that time should perform the prayer at its proper time and count the prayer he performs with them as voluntary. You are in a time in which a person is envied for having few dependents and few expenses. I leave behind me among my family none whose death would be dearer to me than theirs, not even a household of dung beetles (ju'lan), and yet I love them just as you love your families."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih; it has another route in the Book of Zuhd (abstinence), and something similar has previously appeared in the Book of Knowledge.
