Al-Dahhak bin Muzahim says: Once I, Tawus al-Yamani, Amr bin Dinar, Makhul al-Shami and al-Hasan al-Basri (all of us) were in Masjid al-Khayf. We were talking about destiny (qadar), and our voices rose; when our voices grew loud, Tawus stood up and said: "Be silent! I will tell you what I heard Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said): 'Indeed, Allah Almighty has imposed obligations upon you, so do not neglect them; He has set certain limits, so do not transgress them; He has forbidden you certain things, so refrain from them; and He has remained silent about certain things, not out of forgetfulness, so do not pursue those (matters or things). This is a mercy from your Lord, so accept it. All matters are in the Hand of Allah Almighty; they proceed from Allah Almighty and to Him they return. The servants have no delegated authority (tafwid) or will (mashi'ah) in them.'" Then all the people said that they were pleased with what Tawus had narrated.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Nahshal bin Sa'id al-Tirmidhi, who is matruk (abandoned).
