Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty created the creation and settled the decree; He took the covenant from the prophets, while His Throne was upon the water. He took the fortunate people in His right hand and the wretched people in His left hand, though both hands of the Most Gracious are right hands. Then He said: 'O people of the right!' They said: 'Here we are at Your service, and felicity is from You.' The Lord said: 'Am I not your Lord?' The people said: 'Yes indeed.' Then Allah Almighty mixed the two together. One of them said: 'O our Lord, why have You mixed us together?' The Lord said: 'They will have deeds other than that, which they will certainly do; lest they say on the Day of Resurrection: We were unaware of this; or lest they say: Our forefathers committed shirk before, and we were only their offspring who came after them.' So Allah Almighty created the creation, settled the decree and took the covenant from the prophets while His Throne was upon the water; so the people of Paradise are its people, and the people of Hell are its people." A man among those present said: "O Messenger of Allah, then why should deeds be done?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every people will do the deeds for which they were created: the people of Paradise will do the deeds of the people of Paradise, and the people of Hell will do the deeds of the people of Hell." Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about these deeds of ours: are they something we do anew, or something that has already been finished with (that is, already decided in destiny)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do deeds; everyone is facilitated towards that for which he was created." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then we will strive hard in worship."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in abridged form; its chain contains Salim bin Salim, who is da'if (weak), and the chain of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir contains Ja'far bin al-Zubayr, who is da'if (weak). In it he also added these words: "He said: 'O people of the left!' They said: 'Here we are at Your service, and felicity is in Your hand of power.' The Lord said: 'Am I not your Lord?' They said: 'Yes indeed.'"
