Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11785

It is reported about Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him): When the time of his death drew near, he began to weep. His companion said to him: "Why are you weeping?" He said: "By Allah, I am not weeping out of anxiety about death, nor because of leaving the world behind me; but I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'There were only two handfuls: (the people of) one handful are to go to Hell, and (the people of) one (that is, the other) handful are to go to Paradise.'" Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Now I do not know in which of the two handfuls I will be."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains al-Bara' bin Abdullah al-Ghanawi, who is da'if (weak), and the narrator named al-Hasan did not meet Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).
