Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: The famine has devoured us. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Where are you from? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) kept enquiring about his lineage until he recognised him, and it turned out the man was well-off. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If a human being had one or two valleys, he would want to add a third to them; nothing fills the belly of a human being except dust, and whoever repents, Allah Almighty accepts his repentance." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Ibn Majah recorded it, except that it does not contain these words of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Whoever repents, Allah Almighty accepts his repentance."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat.
