Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Quraysh gathered in Dar al-Nadwah and said: Give this man a name that will turn people away from him. Some said: Let us call him a soothsayer. Others said: He is not a soothsayer. Some said: Let us call him mad. Some said: He is not mad either. Some said: Let us call him a sorcerer. They said: He is not a sorcerer either. Then the polytheists dispersed in that state. When news of this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he took his cloak and wrapped himself in it. Sayyiduna Jibril came to him and said: "O you wrapped in garments! O you enveloped in a cloak!"
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, adding these words: They said: He separates a friend from his beloved. Its chain contains a narrator, Mu'alla bin Abd al-Rahman al-Wasiti, who is kadhdhab (a liar).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) will come in the commentary on Surah al-Muddaththir.
