Sayyiduna Kardus Abu al-Sa'ib (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I set out with my father, intending to go to Makkah. This was at the time when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was first being spoken of. We came to a man who owned sheep. When it was midnight, a wolf came and attacked the sheep. The shepherd got up and said: O inhabitant of the valley, your neighbour! We heard a voice, but we could not see the speaker. It said: O Sirhan! Let it go! Then that lamb came running, with no bite mark on it, until it joined the other sheep. The narrator says: Then this verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah: "Some men among humankind used to seek refuge with some men among the jinn."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq al-Kufi, who is da'if (weak).
