Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: Forty of the companions of the Negus came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and took part with him in the Battle of Uhud. They suffered wounds, but none of them was killed. When they realised how needy the believers were, they said: O Messenger of Allah! We are people of means; permit us to bring our wealth and use it to support the Muslims. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning them: "Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it, they believe in it." (And Allah Almighty further says): "Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured." So Allah Almighty appointed a double reward for them. Allah Almighty also said: "And they repel evil with good." The narrator says: This refers to that spending with which they had treated the Muslims well. When this verse was revealed, they said: O company of Muslims! Whoever among us believes in your Book will have a double reward, and whoever does not believe in your Book will have one reward like your rewards. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "O you who believe! Fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will give you a double portion of His mercy, make for you a light by which you will walk, and forgive you." So Allah Almighty granted the believers "further light" and "forgiveness". And Allah Almighty also said: "This is so that the People of the Scripture may know that they have no power over anything of Allah's bounty."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
