Sa'id bin Jubayr said: (Allah Almighty says:) "O you who believe, do not follow the footsteps of Satan." This means: (do not follow) what Satan has made attractive. "And whoever follows the footsteps of Satan", that is, follows what Satan has made attractive, "then indeed he commands indecency." This means he commands sins, "and what is wrong (munkar)", that is, what cannot be called right (ma'ruf), such as what was said about Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). "And had it not been for the grace of Allah Almighty upon you and His mercy", that is, His blessing, "not one of you would ever have been purified", that is, not one of you would ever have become righteous. "But Allah Almighty purifies whom He wills", that is, He reforms whom He wills.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness.
