Mujahid, regarding this statement of Allah Almighty, said: (Allah Almighty says:) "And let not those among you who possess grace and means swear." Mujahid said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had sworn that he would not give any benefit to an orphan who was under his care. A narrator named Abd al-Malik said: That man was Sayyiduna Mistah bin Uthathah bin Abbad bin al-Muttalib, who had spread that talk. When this verse was revealed: "Do you not love that Allah Almighty should forgive you?", Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes indeed! I love that Allah Almighty should forgive me, and now I will be even better towards orphans than I was before.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). He also recorded it with another chain, which is da'if (weak). He also recorded something similar from Qatadah, whose chain is jayyid (good), and he recorded something similar from Sa'id bin Jubayr, except that in it these words are added: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): Do you not love that Allah Almighty should forgive you? He said: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then pardon and overlook! He said: I have pardoned and overlooked; from today onward I will not withhold from him any kindness."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness.
