Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: (Allah Almighty says:) "Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The mockers were these: al-Walid bin al-Mughirah; al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth; al-Aswad bin al-Muttalib Abu Zam'ah, who belonged to Banu Asad bin Abd al-Uzza; al-Harith bin Aytal al-Sahmi; and al-As bin Wa'il al-Sahmi. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) complained to him about these people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) showed Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) al-Walid bin al-Mughirah, and Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) pointed to his vein called the abjal. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Have you done anything? Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: I have sufficed you against him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) showed him al-Harith bin Aytal al-Sahmi, and Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) pointed to his belly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Have you done anything? He said: For your sake, I have sufficed you against him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) showed him al-As bin Wa'il, and he pointed to the hollow of his foot (akhmas). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Have you done anything? He said: I have sufficed you against him. As for al-Walid bin al-Mughirah, he passed by a man of the tribe of Khuza'ah who was fixing feathers to his arrows; an arrow struck his abjal vein and severed it. As for al-Aswad bin al-Muttalib, he went blind. Some of them said that he simply went blind like that, and some stated that he had stopped beneath a tree and began to say: O my sons, will you not keep it away from me? I am ruined; I am being pierced in my eyes by thorns. They began to say: We do not see anything. He remained in that state until both his eyes lost their sight. As for al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth, sores broke out on his head and he died of them. As for al-Harith bin Aytal, yellow water filled his belly until his excrement came out of his mouth, and he died. As for al-As bin Wa'il, a thorn entered his leg, and it became filled with infection because of it, and he died.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Abd al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, whom I do not know; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
