Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the people of Hell are gathered together in Hell, and with them are as many of the people of the Qiblah as Allah wills, the disbelievers will say to the Muslims: 'Were you not Muslims?' They will answer: 'Yes indeed!' The disbelievers will say: 'Then what use was your Islam to you, when you too are with us in Hell?' They will say: 'We had some sins, on account of which we were seized.' Allah Almighty will hear what the disbelievers said, and He will give the command concerning those in Hell who belong to the people of the Qiblah, and they will be brought out of it. When the disbelievers who remain in Hell see this, they will say: 'Would that we too had been Muslims, so that we too would have come out just as these people have come out.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited: 'I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed.' 'Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an. Those who disbelieved will wish that they had been Muslims.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Khalid bin Nafi' al-Ash'ari. Abu Dawud says: He is matruk (abandoned). Al-Dhahabi says: He (Abu Dawud) went beyond bounds in this; he does not deserve to be abandoned, for Ahmad bin Hanbal and others narrated from him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
