Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11097

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reports, as a marfu' hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), something which in my opinion concerns this saying of Allah Almighty, (Allah Almighty says:) "(The people of Hell will say:) It is the same for us whether we lament or are patient; there is no escape for us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of Hell will say: 'Come, let us be patient.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says: "They will be patient for five hundred years. When they see that it has not benefited them, they will say: 'Come, let us lament.' Then they will weep for five hundred years. When they see that this too has not benefited them, then they will say: 'It is the same for us whether we lament or are patient; there is no escape for us.'"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Anas bin Abi al-Qasim; it is like this in al-Tabarani. Imam al-Dhahabi mentioned Anas bin al-Qasim in Mizan al-I'tidal (saying that) he is Anas bin Abi Numayr, and that Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him as having narrated from Ka'b al-Ahbar, whereas that is not so; Ibn Abi Hatim said that he narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) and that al-Firyabi narrated from him, (adding:) "I heard my father say this." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: That is not so, because Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi did not narrate from any of the students of Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). The correct position is what is mentioned in al-Tabarani: this narrator narrated from the son of Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), and al-Firyabi narrated from him; and Allah knows best. Ibn Hibban mentioned Anas Abu al-Qasim in this generation, that is, among the followers of the Tabi'in; and Allah knows best. The remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
