Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11033

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: At first Allah Almighty made it obligatory upon the Muslims that each man would fight against ten men. This weighed heavily on the people, so Allah Almighty lightened it for them, and the command came that one man would fight against two men. Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning it: "If there are twenty among you who are patient, they will overcome two hundred," to the end of the verse. Then He said: "Had it not been for a decree from Allah that had gone before, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took." Allah Almighty is saying: Were it not that I do not punish whoever disobeys Me until I have warned him beforehand. Then Allah Almighty said: "O Prophet! Say to those captives who are in your hands." Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! This verse was revealed concerning me, when I told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of my Islam and asked him to let me off in respect of the twenty uqiyah that he had found with me. In exchange for it he gave me twenty slaves, all of them traders with wealth in their hands, besides which I hope for forgiveness from Allah Almighty." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this report is in the Sahih.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in abridged form. The narrators of al-Mu'jam al-Awsat are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Ibn Ishaq, and he has explicitly stated that he heard it directly.
