Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11032

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Thirty-nine men and women had accepted Islam with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, the number forty was completed, and this verse was revealed concerning it: "O Prophet! Allah is sufficient for you, and those of the believers who follow you."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ishaq bin Bishr al-Kahili, who is kadhdhab (a liar).
