عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَهُمْ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنْهُ وَيَنْأَوْنَ عَنْهُ ، نَزَلَتْ فِي أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، كَانَ يَنْهَى عَنْ أَذَى النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَيَنْأَى عَنِ اتِّبَاعِهِ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ قَيْسُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ ، وَثَّقَهُ شُعْبَةُ وَغَيْرُهُ ، وَضَعَّفَهُ ابْنُ مَعِينٍ وَغَيْرُهُ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: (Allah Almighty says:) "And they forbid (others) from him (the Prophet), and they keep away from him (the Prophet)." (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:) This verse was revealed concerning Abu Talib, who used to forbid people from harming the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while himself keeping away from following him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Qays bin al-Rabi', whom Shu'bah and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared him da'if (weak); the rest of the narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
