Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: There were some people from the people of Makkah who had accepted Islam, and they were concealing their Islam. When the polytheists set out towards Badr, the polytheists brought these people along with them by force. Some of them were killed at the Battle of Badr along with the polytheists. The Muslims said: "These companions of ours were Muslims, and those people brought them by force, so pray for forgiveness for them." So this verse was revealed about it: "Indeed, those whom the angels take in death while they are wronging themselves." The Muslims wrote this verse and sent it to the remaining people of that group who were in Makkah. Those people set out, and at some point on the way the polytheists got the better of them and of their departure; they caught up with them and took them back, and those people went back with the polytheists. So this verse was revealed about it: "Among the people are some who say: 'We believe in Allah,' and when they are harmed in the way of Allah, they treat the trial coming from people like the punishment of Allah." The Muslims then wrote this verse and sent it to them, and they were saddened by it. So this verse was revealed about it: "Then indeed your Lord, for those who migrated after they had been put to trial, and then strove and were patient, indeed your Lord after that is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful." So the Muslims wrote this verse too and sent it to them. (Allamah al-Haythami said:) I say: Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded part of this narration.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Muhammad bin Sharik, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
